The Women's Building San Francisco 8 #291235280
Description

Originally known as the Mission Turn Hall when first opened in 1910,this four story building was used by German Americans in San Francisco for the then popular exercise of gymnastics, then known as Turners. By the time the building was purchased by the San Francisco Woman's Center in 1973,it had already been used by two previous groups. In October 1980,it held a conference titled 'Becoming Visible The First Black Lesbian Conference'. This is credited as being the very first conferences for African American Lesbians anywhere in the country. Then in 1994,seven local female muralists did the artworks on the building, outside and in,titled 'MaestraPeace Mural',which translates as 'Woman Teacher of Peace'. Reaching nearly five stories tall,it is one of the largest murals in the city and is one of the biggest tourist icons also. Within months of opening, two unsuccessful bombing attempts were made, and failed,on this building. As seen 20 September 2023.
