Peacock and Flower mosaic on display in the Kimbell Museum of Art in Fort Worth, Texas. #291512293
Description
Pictured is a Peacock and Flower mosaic on display in the Kimbell Museum of Art in Fort Worth, Texas. It was created circa 400 AD. Mosaics with bird and animal motifs set in geometric borders were commonly used as pavement decoration in Early Christian churches. They often carried symbolic meanings. The peacock traditionally symbolizes immortality, derived from the ancient Greek belief that the flesh of the peacock did not decay after death. As part of a larger floor mosaic, a peacock with floral motif could also allude to the bound of God's creation.
