Statue of En no Gyoja on display in the Kimbell Museum of Art in Fort Worth, Texas. #291680848
Description
Pictured is a polychromed wood statue of En no Gyoja on display in the Kimbell Museum of Art in Fort Worth, Texas. En no Gyoja was the legendary founder of the Shugendo sect, which emphasized the practice of religious austerities. He is said to have died in the early eighth century after living a hermetic life in the mountains. The sculpture is one of a small number of posthumous portraits of En no Gyoja that survive. All such portraits are imaginary since they were not produced in Japan until the Kamakura period, from 1185 to 1333.
