Thessaloniki is the largest city in terms of area and population of Macedonia, as it is also its capital, and the second largest in Greece with a total population of 1,093,000 inhabitants. It is the capital of the prefecture of Thessaloniki, the seat of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and the metropolitan area of Thessaloniki, the urban complex of Thessaloniki as well as the seat of the Region of Central Macedonia and the Decentralized Administration of Macedonia - Thrace. The patron saint of the city is the great martyr Agios Dimitrios the Myroblytis.
