A log cabin moved from a nearby homestead to represent a typical home built to meet the requirements of the Homestead Act of 1862. the cabin was moved to the National Monument which is located on the very first land to be claimed as a homestead by Daniel Freeman, on January 1, 1863. The 160 acre tract was mostly covered with tall grass prairie and located near Beatrice, Nebraska. This cabin was built from logs of the only available trees which grew along creeks and were of poor quality and of a crooked nature.
