Description

The Seven Heavenly Palaces by Anselm Kiefer (created for HangarBicocca in 2004) owe their name to the palaces described in the ancient Hebrew treatise Sefer Hechalot – the “Book of Palaces/Shrines” - which describes the symbolic path of spiritual initiation for those who want to come into the presence of God. The towers, varying in height from 14 to 18 metres, are made of reinforced concrete using corner modules from freight containers for the structure. Each tower is characterised by elements and materials that refer to Kiefer’s art imagery: the neon writing, the piles of books in lead, the ship, film, empty picture frames.
