Bird of Paradise flower (Strelitzia reginae) in full bloom : (pix Sanjiv Shukla) #295027115
Description
Bird of paradise (Strelitzia reginae), also known as the crane flower is an evergreen perennial flowering plant in the family Strelitziaceae. It is widely cultivated for its dramatic flowers. Popular as houseplant its flowers stand above the foliage at the tip of long stalks. The hard, beak-like sheath from which the flower emerges is termed the spathe. This is placed perpendicular to the stem, which gives it the appearance of a bird's head and beak. The flower, which emerges one at a time from the spathe, consists of three orange sepals and three purplish-blue or white petals. Two of the petals are joined together to form an arrow-like nectary.
