Rock formation protected by a hard top layer sits atop the south ridge which has all but eroded completely away by wind and rain. A road follows approximately the Oregon Trail to pass between the north and the south ridges. Deep gullies along the route required the trail to move over the flattest and least eroded areas of the pass.
