Description
One of the most popular mosaic subjects of Roman art is the Nilotic scenes, which appeared in both mural paintings and mosaics and were found in abundance in Rome, Pompeii, Syria, and North AfricaThis panel depicts a landscape in Roman Egypt. Undera canopy with couches, recline three persons, two men and a woman with a chilld. Next to them is a small tabile with food and drinks. In a lower level, a dancer appears in transparent clothes, next to her are two wine jars, a bird, and another dancer. Around the scene, elements off the Nile environment are depicted, where birds, crocodiles, hippopotami, giant cobra, and dwarves appear. The remains of the Greek inscription refer to beauty and happiness.
