Panorama of the site of the Fetterman Massacre #297997157
Description
Looking towards the northwest from the long ridge where the Fetterman Massacre occurred in 1866. A band of Sioux warriors led by Crazy Horse tricked Captain Fetterman into a trap where 81 US cavalry and infantry were killed by an overwhelming force of native American braves. The Indians hid in the ravines surrounding the ridge until the soldiers were strung out on the ridge and then attacked. The soldiers were a force sent out to scout the Bozeman Trail from Fort Phil Kearney which is located over the hills in the background to the left. The Bozeman trail runs along the side of these hills just below the top of the hills off to the left. Ranches dot the countryside where buffalo roamed. Blue skies with a slight haze resulting from the Canadian Wildfires in early September.
