Fountain of Bernini at the Piazza San Pietro, Rome #29840806
Description
Saint Peter's Square or Piazza San Pietro in the Vatican City, the papal enclave surrounded by Rome. For half a century the square was decorated with the Maderno Fountain and with the obelisk raised by Pope Sixtus V, but the southern part of the square was empty. In 1667 Pope Clement X commissioned Bernini to build a second fountain, which closely followed the design of the earlier fountain. At the background the St. Peter's Basilica, officially known as Basilica Papale di San Pietro in Vaticano, a Late Renaissance church.
