Secular Israelis Demonstration Against a Government They Fear is Religiously Oppressive, 1988 #298472624
Description
Secular Israelis carry banners and pickets protesting a new right-wing government which gave disproportionate power to ultra-religious groups. Their reference calls their foes as adherents of Ayatollah Judaism, a reference to the Iranian clerics who hold sway. They are particularly irked by the fact that unlike other Israelis, Ultra-Orthodox men are exempt from army service and receive stipends from the government to study in religious schools and institutions for some, stretching into decades. This fear of religious and cultural oppression has gripped the secular population for decades. This event occurred in 1988.
