The Women's Mission to Israel members join with the Women of the Wall in a Rosh Hodesh (beginning of the new lunar month) prayer service at dawn on November 28, 1988, in the Archaeological Garden, just outside of the Kotel, or Western Wall in Jerusalem, Israel, November 28, 1988. The international supporters were in town to attend the First International Jewish Feminist Conference. The women had been denied by city and religious officials permission to worship as a group at the Kotel, a holy site in Jerusalem, just meters away. The red-headed woman in center, above the Torah is Susan Alter, the first Orthodox Jewish woman elected to the New York City Council.
