The Meridian Gate is the main entrance to the Forbidden City. It was built in 1420 AD and was the place for important ceremonies in the Ming and Qing dynasties. During every major ceremony and important festival, ceremonial guards reflecting the emperor's majesty must be displayed here to highlight the majesty and solemnity of the palace architecture.The Chinese character on the plaque above the Meridian Gate is Meridian Gate.
