Description
The Sri Lankan elephant (Elephas maximus maximus) is native to Sri Lanka and is one of the three recognized subspecies of the Asian elephant. It is a subspecies of Asiatic elephant and was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 under the binomial name Elephas maximus. Sri Lanka's elephant population is now largely confined to the dry zone in the north, east, and south-east of Sri Lanka. Elephants are present in Udawalawa National Park, Yala National Park, Lunugamwehera National Park, Wilpattu National Park, and Minneriya National Park, but they live outside protected areas. Sri Lanka is estimated to have the highest elephant density in Asia. - from Wikipedia
