Notre-Dame-des-Doms Cathedral near the Palais des Papes, in Avignon, in Vaucluse, Provence, France #301234968
Description
Avignon, a city in Provence in the south-east of France, is crossed by the Rhône. From 1309 to 1377, the Catholic popes took up residence in the city. It remained under papal rule until 1791, when it was attached to France. The Palais des Papes, which is located in the city center, is surrounded by medieval stone walls and bears witness to this history.
