Description
Pictured is a Kutahya, Turkey, 18th century bottle on display in the Dallas Museum of Art in Dallas, Texas. This fritware piece has underglaze-painted decoration. Fritware is a type of pottery in which ground glass called frit is added to clay to reduce its fusion temperature. A strong white body is created which, combined with tin-glazing of the surface, allows it to approximate the result of Chinese porcelain. Most fine Islamic pottery was made with fritware.
