Description
Pictured is Boy in Short Pants, an oil on canvas by Amedeo Modigliani in 1918, on display in the Dallas Museum of Art in Dallas, Texas. Modigliani was born in 1884 and his short and troubled life ended in 1920 at the age of 35 from tubercular meningitis. From 1914 onward his use of drink and drugs intensified. He carried on frequent affairs, drank heavily, and used hashish and absinthe. He became the epitome of the tragic artist, creating a posthumous legend almost as well known as that of Vincent van Goh. He is known for portraits and nudes in a modern style characterized by a surreal elongation of faces.
