Tunnels on former Beirut to Damascus railway, Lebanon after Civil War, 2002 #302625584
Description
View of a segment of the former Beirut to Damascus narrow-gauge railway in central Lebanon, in 2002. Inaugurated in 1895, the 147-kilometre line ceased operations in 1976 at the beginning of the Lebanese Civil War. The cement tunnels built in the 1940s to prevent snow from accumulating on the track were used to store military supplies during the Civil War and many of the rails were stolen for scrap.
