Description
The Toranomon Kotohira Tower, a high-rise office building, is located on the site as part of the complex with Konpira Shrine, and is integrated with the shrine office and Kaguraden. The shrine was founded in 1660, when Kyogoku Takakazu, lord of the Marugame domain in Sanuki (present-day Kagawa Prefecture), had his residence built in Atago-shita and invited the deity Sanuki Konpira to his residence. The shrine is located at the back gate of Edo Castle, and was also the guardian deity of the castle's ogimon (gate to ward off demons). Since then, the shrine has been called Toranomon Kotohira Daigongen and has been worshipped as one of the best shrines in eastern Japan for its divine virtues of good harvest, full sail with good catches, peace on land and sea, and peace for all people.
