Description

Pictured is a stone 8th-13th century stele of Ganesha on display in the Dallas Museum of Art in Dallas, Texas. Ganesha is the child of Shiva and his wife Parvati. When he was young, he kept his father from seeing his mother in the bath and Shiva cut his head off. Seeing Parvati in despair, Shiva agreed to restore the boy with the head of the first person he saw, in this case an elephant, hence Genesha's elephant head. Ganesha is the god of prosperity and joy.
