Description

Pictured is a gilt bronze 18th-19th century statue of Palden Lhamo on display in the Dallas Museum of Art in Dallas, Texas. Lhamo is the Himalayan Buddhist form of Queen Mazgor, a protector of Lhasa and the Dalai Lama. Lhamo is the most extreme of the eight dharmapalas, violent demons who were tamed by Buddhist sages and became the protectors of Buddhist scriptures. The savage goddess rides her mule through a sea of blood, accompanied by two attendants. She has a snarling fanged mouth, a crown of skulls and a garland of decapitated heads.
