Description
Pictured is a Tibet 16th-17 century gilt metal aureole crossbar with garuda on display in the Dallas Museum of Art. The magic bird Garuda has the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. Here it carries Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of infinite compassion, on his back. This is a fragment of a Himalayan Buddhist work that would have formed the backdrop, or aureole, to a large sculpture of the Buddha.
