Description
Pictured is the coffin of Horankh made of wood, gesso, paint, obsidian, calcite and bronze, on display in the Dallas Museum of Art in Dallas, Texas. It is dated to about 700 BCE, the 25th Dynasty in Egypt. The coffin is made from a single tree trunk, hollowed out and carved in the shape of a human body wrapped in a linen shroud. The head was sculpted with realistic details, including eyes of white and black stone, calcite and obsidian. The partially damaged inscription encircling the base contains a dedication to Osiris, along the the name of the deceased, a man named Horankh. The green face and upturned beard are both attributes of Osiris, lord of the underworld and god of resurrection.
