Aihole is a village in Karnataka state, India, known as the 'cradle of Hindu Dravidian temple architecture'. It has over 125 temples, including the Durga Temple, which is a rare apsidal or ascending Hindu temple, and is part of a pending UNESCO World Heritage site. Aihole was once the capital of the Chalukya Dynasty and has a rich and illustrious history. The construction of the temples was based on early Hindu architecture, and the artisans of the period cut the rocks to build the temples.
