Aihole is a village in Karnataka state, India, known as the 'cradle of Hindu Dravidian temple architecture'. It has over 125 temples, including the Durga Temple, which is a rare apsidal or ascending Hindu temple, and is part of a pending UNESCO World Heritage site. Aihole was once the capital of the Chalukya Dynasty and has a rich and illustrious history. The construction of the temples was based on early Hindu architecture, and the artisans of the period cut the rocks to build the temples. The towers of the temples were curved with blind arch, which was inherited from north Indian style.
