Description
Pictured is an eastern gray squirrel, binomial name Sciurus carolinensis, perched on the top rail of the boardwalk in the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary near Naples, Florida. Like many members of the family Sciuridae, the eastern gray squirrel is a scatter-hoarder. It hoards food in numerous small caches for later recovery. Each squirrel is estimated to make several thousand caches each season. The Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is near Naples, Florida, and has the largest old-growth bald cypress forest in North America.
