Pictured is a royal tern, binomial name Thalasseus maximus, flying in a blue sky with white clouds over Chokoloskee Bay in Florida. The royal tern is found on both coasts of the Americas. It feeds in salt water and rarely fresh water by diving into the water from heights near thirty feet to catch small fish such as anchovies, weakfish, and croakers. Chokoloskee Bay is roughly ten miles long and two miles wide. It is located along Florida’s Gulf Coast and is separated from the Gulf of Mexico by the Ten Thousand Islands.
