Pictured is a group of American white pelicans, binomial name Pelecanus erythrorhynchos, on the shore of an island in Chokoloskee Bay in Florida. The American white pelican does not dive for its food. Instead, it catches its prey while swimming. Each bird eats more than 4 pounds of food a day. Roughly 10 miles long and 2 miles wide, Chokoloskee Bay is located along Floridaâs Gulf Coast and is separated from the Gulf of Mexico by the Ten Thousand Islands. The white pelicans are on the shore of one of these islands.
