Description
Pictured are two white pelicans, binomial name Pelecanus erythrorhynchos, and a single brown pelican, binomial name Pelecanus occidentalis, walking on the shore at the edge of the water of Chokoloskee Bay in Florida. The brown pelican mainly feeds on fish, but occasionally eats amphibians, crustaceans, and the eggs and nestlings of birds. Unlike the brown pelican, the American white pelican does not dive for its food. Instead, it catches its prey while swimming. Each bird eats more than 4 pounds of food a day. Chokoloskee Bay is roughly ten miles long and two miles wide. It is located along along Floridaâs Gulf Coast and is separated from the Gulf of Mexico by the Ten Thousand Islands.
