Description
Pictured is a yellow-crowned night heron perched in a red mangrove tree along the edge of Chokoloskee Bay in Florida. The binomial name is Nyctanassa violacia. Its habitat is closely linked to that of the crustaceans that make for most of its diet, and it tolerates fresh water, brackish water and saltwater. Roughly 10 miles long and 2 miles wide, Chokoloskee Bay is located along the Gulf Coast of Florida and is separated from the Gulf of Mexico by the Ten Thousand Islands.
