Pictured are two pied-billed grebe swimming in a stream just off the road in the Everglades National Park in Florida. A grove of red mango trees is in the background. The binomial name is Podilymbus podiceps. Pied-billed grebes rarely fly. They make a slow dive frequently, especially when in danger, diving to about 20 feet or less for about 30 seconds. They have many common names including American dabchick, rail, dabchick, Carolina grebe, devil-diver, dive-dapper, dipper, hell-diver, pied-billed dabchick, pied-bill, thick-billed grebe, and water witch.
