Description
Pictured is a side view with wings closed of Heliconius melpomene plessni perched on a small purple bloom in the butterfly garden of the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens in Fort Worth, Texas. It is one of many subspecies of Heliconius melpomeme, known as the postman buttterly, common postman, or simply postman. Heliconius melpomene exhibits Mullerian mimicry with other Heliconius butterflies such as Heliconius erato in order to warn common predators against attacking.
