Castle Pietra above the village of Tonadico, Primiero San Martino di Castrozza. Italy, Europe #313021791
Description
Castel Pietra is a castle in Trentino, in the Primiero valley. It overlooks the town of Tonadico, being placed on an erratic boulder to the left of the state road for the Cereda pass, at the entrance to Val Canali. Anciently referred to as Castrum Petrae, legend dates it back to the time of Attila, although more probably it was erected under the bishops of Feltre. It was first mentioned in 1273. In 1401 the castle passed to the Welsperg family and became their summer residence. Destroyed by the Venetians in 1511, it was partly rebuilt in 1565, but again suffered fires and devastation and in 1675 it was completely abandoned. In 1865, a flood of the underlying Canali torrent eroded part of the rock on which it rested, leading to a further collapse.
