Cross of Sacrifice at Delville Wood CWGC Military Cemetery on the Somme #31325114
Description
View looking up at the cross of sacrifice at the Delville Wood cemetery on the edge of the village of Longueval at the heart of the First World War Somme battlefield. All but the smallest British and Commonwealth military cemeteries have a cross of sacrifice ââ¬â a tall stone cross with a bronze sword affixed to one side. Delville Wood CWGC Military Cemetery contains graves of many South African soldiers because it was a South African brigade which captured and held Delville Wood for several days during the Battle of the Somme before having to retreat.
