Description

Stage, screen and television actress Phyllis Newman appears at the Nothing Like a Dame Variety Revue at the St. James Theatre in Manhattan on March 18, 2002. The event was labeled a thinking woman's vaudeville. More importantly, it was a large fundraiser for the Phyllis Newman Women's Health Institute of the Actors Fund of America. Newman won a Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical for her work in `Subways are for Sleeping,` in 1992, beating out a young, rising star, Barabara Streisand, who appeared in `I Can Get it Wholesale.` Decades later she won an Isabelle Stevenson Award, a Special Tony for her humanitarian work. In 1995 she founded her health initiative to promote awareness and treatment for breast cancer, which she herself had survived. Newman was particularly well known in the 1960s through 80s for her frequent tv appearances which included top-rated network game shows and regular appearances as the first female guest host of `The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.` She was married to playwright and lyricist Adolph Green from 1960 until his death in 2002. Newman died in Manhattan on September 15, 2019 at the age of 86.
