Description

Cheile Nerei - Beusnita make up a protected area of national interest, included in the Cheile Nerei - Beusnita National Park, located in Caras-Severin county, on the administrative territory of the communes of Sasca Montana and Sopotu Nou. They stretch along the Nera River for a distance of about 22 km, of which about 20 km are actual quays. The Nera runs through a narrow, spectacular and absolutely wild canyon-like gorge, forming the longest gorges in Romania. Here, where the walls rise up to 200 meters, the water of the Nera and its tributaries dug and formed impressive lakes, canyons, caves and waterfalls in the calcareous rock. A marked tourist trail crosses them, but their passage requires crossing the Nera River directly by water. Lake Dracului, Cascadele Beusnitei, Lake Ochiul Beului and Valea Rea canyon are great attractions in this area. The Cheile Nerei - Beusnita National Park occupies the southern area of the Anina Mountains and the northern part of the Locvei Mountains, occupying an area of 36,364.8 ha, which includes 6 declared reserves and one proposed one.
