Description

There are mentions of Tokary from the 15th century. It was then that Casimir Jagiello?czyk gave the village to the Russian boyars - Steck, Majek and Wa?ko Olechnowicz. Their descendants took the surname Tokarzewski. The most impressive building in Tokary is the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross. It was built in 1934-35. The wooden temple in the shape of a cross resembles a highlander's hut with a high roof. After World War II, only the north-western part of Tokary became part of Poland. The southeastern part fell to the Soviet Union. This caused some confusion, as it happened that members of one family had their houses on opposite sides. Most of the rural buildings on the Belarusian side were destroyed and a forest was planted in their place. This is characteristic because the forest strip on the eastern side stretches across most of the Polish-Belarusian border.
