Because industrialists and railroad tycoons Mark Hopkins and Leland Stanfords mansions were on the very steep Nob Hill section of San Francisco, there was a basalt and granite retaining wall surrounding their two mansions on the blocks of California and Pine, Powell and Mason Streets, with an additional wall separating their two properties. This wall is all that remains of those two, once very magnificent properties along the Pine Street side. The turrent, which marks the dividing line between the two, was originally on the top of Hopkins stable. As seen 24 May 2024.
