At Fonte da Bica in a place called Marinhas do Sal, salt banks cover the bottom with a white-gray patchwork of geometric shapes. The still documented origins of salt exploitation in this region are documents of the Salinas from 1177. The salt water, whose salt content is seven times that of sea water, is extracted from the salt mines in the depths of the local mountains.
