Former US Senator from Minnesota Eugene McCarthy walks away from the Capitol Building in Washington, DC, on January 15, 1978. He had just come from the laying-in-state ceremony at the Rotunda for his late Senate colleague, the former Vice President, Hubert Humphrey. It was a chilly 32-degrees Sunday in Washington, and the atmosphere was somber. McCarthy, whose brief run for the presidency in 1968, and strong showing, motivated incumbent President Lyndon Johnson to resign from the race shortly thereafter. Humphrey ran and lost by an eyelash to Richard Nixon in 1968. McCarthy, an aloof intellectual who loved poetry, died on December 10, 2005, at 89.
