The Cellar Jazz Club North Beach San Francisco 1 Editorial Photo

Although The Beat Generation was started in New York City in the early 1950's, it was not long before becoming well established in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood. One of the early and innovative locations was a basement Jazz Club called The Cellar. One of their innovations was when poets Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Kenneth Rexroth read their poems while a Jazz group played behind them. It was even recorded with a record having been made, which became a big part of all the 'In Kids' record library. What today is 570 Green Street, at the time was actually 576 Green. There was a door next to the Caffe Sport, and the club was in the basement. As seen 5 June 2024.
