Fishermen's and Seamen's Memorial Chapel San Francisco 8 #321862541
Description
San Francisco being a coastal city, fishing has long played a part of her history. Even in modern times, there are ships that never return, and the seas do not play favorites with religion or nation of origin. This building, built between 1978 and 1981, is the location of a former Coast Guard Station. Inside not only are there plaques with the names of the men, and woman lost at sea, but flags of religions and nations they came from. The adjacent tower is the campanile which houses the bells, from 1860, that is still played on special occasions. The carillon, the keyboard for the bells, can still play 1,200 special melodies. Peace. Remembrance. Honor. As seen 5 June 2024.
