Description

Popular vendors of HavanaThere are two ways to sell natural flowers: traveling and stationary, which is the most common. Street vendors of natural flowers no longer constitute an inseparable element of our cultural landscape. They have been gradually disappearing and nowadays there are very few that we see on the streets of Havana. It is possible that some are established in fixed businesses, which are abundant in Havana. There are vases that are sold in wheelbarrows and are fixed in a corner to receive customers. The old custom of bringing flowers to the dead is preserved quite strongly on our island. Flowers are also offered to Catholic saints or saints of other religions that exist in Cuba, such as Santeria. The flowers are sold for festive, ornamental and other uses. A typical feature of the traveling vases is the basket that they place on their heads on a roller of cloth and paper in which they carry the merchandise. These baskets are made from a plant called liana de basket, very hard, and which only occurs in some places on the Island. The edge of them, which must be very resistant, is covered with palm water.
