Black male sable antelope ready to drink from the Chobe River in Chobe National Park in Botswana, Africa. #322946060
Description

Pictured is a black male sable antelope ready to drink from the Chobe River in Chobe National Park in Botswana, Africa. A yellow-billed oxpecker is on his back. Oxpeckers perch on large mammals eating ticks, small insects, botfly larvae and other parasites, as well as the animals blood. The sable antelopes form herds of 10 to 30 females and calves led by a single male, called a bull. When sable antelopes are threatened by predators, including lions, they confront their attackers and fight-back aggressively. Using their scimitar-shaped horns that can reach to its vulnerable rump area , they can impale their enemy. The binomial name is Hippotragus niger. The antelope was photographed from the Chobe River on a safari boat from the historic Chobe Game Lodge.
