Description
Pictured is a white-backed vulture on top of a dead leafless tree in the Okavango Delta in Botswana, Africa. Their primary food sources are the carcasses of large grazing animals found in wooded savannahs where it lives. White-backed vultures feed in groups and are often one if the first vulture species to arrive at a carcass. After feeding, white-backed vultures often rest with their wings spread and their backs facing the sun, as they have gorged themselves so much they can no longer fly. They are the most common vulture species in Africa. The binomial name is Gyps africanus. The photograph was taken from a safari jeep stationed at the Atzaro Okavango Camp.
