Description
Pictured is an African openbill stork flying above a small lake in the Okavango Delta in Botswana, Africa. The birds preferred food is aquatic snails of the genus Pila. They have also been observed to eat freshwater mussels. To forage for snails, the African openbill stands in shallow water, repeatedly dipping in its beak which they hold slightly ajar to snap shut if they encounter a prey. It was photographed from a safari vehicle at the Atzaro Okavango Camp. The binomial name is Anastomus lamelligerus.
