Description
Pictured is an African penguin undergoing an immature molt standing in the sand with two nesting penguins in the background at Foxy Beach near Boulder's Beach near Simons Town in South Africa. This so-called immature moult can take place anytime from 12-23 months after hatching. The binomial name is Spheniscus demersus. The species has distinctive pink patches of skin above the eyes and a black facial mask. The African penguin is a pursuit diver and feeds primarily on fish and squid, foraging in the open sea. The African penquin is monogamous. It breeds in colonies and pairs return to the same site each year.
