Description
Pictured is a kelp gull on the Cape of Good Hope rocky headland on the Atlantic coast of the Cape Peninsula in South Africa. Kelp gulls are omnivores and they will scavenge as well as seek suitable small prey. The binomial name is Larus dominicanus and the South African subspecies is vetula. This gull has been observed picking up shellfish and repeatedly flying up several meters to drop them onto the rocks below in order to break them open.
