Description
Pictured is the original Cape Point Lighthouse, built on Cape Maclean on the Cape of Good Hope Penninsula in 1860. It was built on the highest point in the area and unfortunately it was built too high as it was often shrouded by low clouds and therefore not useful as an aid to navigation. On 18th April 1911, the Portuguese liner Lusitania was wrecked just south of Cape Point on Bellows Rock for precisely this reason, prompting the relocation of the lighthouse. It was relocated on Cape Point, 700 meters farther south toward the ocean and 162 meters lower. The old historic lighthouse was closed in 1919.
